Common name: Magellanic woodpecker
Scientific name: Campephilus magellanicus
Size between 15″ and 17.7″. It is common to see it alone or in couples. Males are distinct because of their red head, while females tend to be totally black. Its near-by presence can be detected by the strong sound of its hammering or by its unmistakable pervasive scream. Classified as a Vulnerable species. It is a resident bird of Tierra del Fuego, but it can only be found in the extensive forests of Nothofagus in the southern part of the island.
