Austral Negrito

Common name: Austral Negrito
Scientific name: Lessonia rufa

It reaches a size from 12 to 13 cm. Its plumage makes it clearly distinguishable from any other bird of similar size, since the male is black and the mantle (back of the bird) has a deep reddish coloration. This is the reason why in Spanish it is called “schoolboy”, as it resembles the backpack or bag of a schoolboy.

It has migratory habits, therefore, it arrives in Magallanes from mid-August for breeding. The males arrive about 2 weeks before the females. It does not have a characteristic vocalization, but rather weak and infrequent. However, it is a trusting bird, so it is possible to observe it close to humans.

Of terrestrial behavior, it looks for insects and moves in short and fast flights. It is seen in the region’s steppe, scrubland, murtillar bush and humid areas.

Conservation Status: LC (Least Concern)
